Three Roadblocks to Your Ideal Doula Life

doula doula business May 03, 2022

I’m not gonna lie, and tell you that I have everything all figured out, and that these roadblocks don’t apply to me.  I’m always recreating myself and trying new things, learning new skills that I feel will make me a better person and a better teacher, coach, mentor, drummer, swimmer. I still sometimes have doubts, and fall into a scarcity mindset.

There are a few roadblocks that every entrepreneur runs into at some point in their doula career.

Especially for the doulas that also run a solo business.  I’ve lived these experiences and you may have also.

Let me know if any of these resonate with you.

  1. Self-doubt or even imposter syndrome. This can actually happen at any stage of the game, but especially when you’re starting out as a new doula, or creating a new product, service, or course. Second guessing yourself, wondering if you need more classes before you can really do the work, not knowing how and not certain who can help you. And, if you’re actually good enough.
  2. Scarcity mindset. These show up as thoughts like, “I don’t have enough time.” I can’t muster up the energy right now.”  “There’s never enough money.” This will surely stop you in your journey. Like giant boulders in the roadway. Being aware of what triggers you to get into this way of thinking is helpful. It takes practice to shift from this. There are many meditation techniques and activities you can do to work this out. (another whole blog post) A lot of this stems from deep rooted beliefs from childhood, and cultural definitions and expectations about life and success.
  3. Not knowing who your clients or customers are. Doulas have big hearts, and dreams to make birth, babies, breastfeeding and all things motherhood easier and less stressful for those they serve. Many doulas want to support every pregnant woman.  I used to think that every pregnant woman was my potential customer, and I said yes to all who inquired about my postpartum doula services.  I learned through trial and error, biz coaches, and courses, that there were some clients that were not a good fit. And, others who felt like the perfect match.  You’ll have a much easier time when you narrow down who you want to help, so you can focus your marketing message and efforts there.

There are many moving parts to becoming a successful postpartum doula. You want to know why you’re doing this work, and what you’ll need to feel ready to serve. The roadblocks are designed for you to find a way forward. Sometimes you gotta get out of the car and move the boulder,  get assistance to move it out of your way, or take a different road.

I want you to know that as I write this I am speaking to myself as well as to you.  I’ve experienced many roadblocks along my way, and have always been able to keep traveling forward. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming, or like an eternity before the next great thing happens in your doula business. Commit to yourself to keep going.
