What the Hell Does Your Root Chakra Have to Do with Postpartum Doula Training?

First of all, do you know what chakras are?  The chakras are your energy centers, and there are 7 major ones in your body. The root chakra is located at the base of the spine.

Look at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs here.

As a postpartum doula your focus is on physiology and safety. This is where you can have maximum impact and serve within your scope of practice. This is also about root chakra, the energy center that is about grounding, safety, and security.

You want your clients to be healing by resting and eating nutritious food, feeling loved and taken care of.  As a postpartum doula you also want to feel rested, well nourished, safe and secure. Your root chakra is the foundation of your life, and your business. It’s about feeling grounded and solid.

As long as I’ve been doing postpartum doula training, it has always been about learning about a variety of topics and possible scenarios you may encounter.  There is usually a focus on mood disorders and breastfeeding counseling and support, family dynamics, newborn sleep and behavior and a few other things.  This is great and there’s more.

Energetically and physically, postpartum doulas bring themselves into someone else’s home, lifestyle and circumstances. It’s critical that a postpartum doula is aware of what they are feeling, sensing and observing, starting with themselves. That’s why I emphasize in Doula Quest, getting to know yourself well.

As a Reiki Master teacher and practitioner, I love sharing about chakras and how they relate to everything, really. Starting at the root, you can identify where you may be out of balance, and you can learn how to find your center, and be more in homeostasis and joy. Then you can bring that to your postpartum doula clients, and be the light in the darkness.

The truth is, if your root chakra is out of whack, chances are you’ll be challenged to reach self-actualization, at the top of Maslow’s pyramid. This is what everyone wants; to be, do and have all they desire, and live in joy, peace and freedom.

Remember that you are a mind, body and spirit. You get to feed all of them and find your balance to live your best life. Learning about your chakras and how to create maximum health will support you with your postpartum doula business and the families you serve.
